Become a HRMI intern

Are you a student looking for a meaningful human rights internship, for course credit, or in a paid role? Come and join us at the Human Rights Measurement Initiative.

We love hosting interns!

HRMI interns quickly become core members of our team, and are able to contribute their thoughts and opinions in all areas of our work, as well as doing useful, important tasks that help us serve the human rights community with relevant data.

Students in New Zealand can apply for paid, in-person internships through our host organisation, Motu Economic and Public Policy Research. Visit the Motu website to apply.

Students anywhere can intern with HRMI remotely through their own university internship programmes. Contact us if you are looking for somewhere to serve. Professors and university staff are welcome to contact us to arrange places for students.

We particularly welcome interns from the Global South and those who have difficulty accessing internships because of their locations, or other reasons.

Who can be an intern?

We are looking for highly-motivated, reliable, senior students with a demonstrated interest in international human rights. The ability to learn to work with data is important. We are able to tailor your internship to suit your skills and background.

HRMI is a globally-distributed, friendly team. We love welcoming new team members and would be glad to host you.

Are the interns paid?

We do not offer full-time, unpaid internships, for reasons of equity — we know that many people can’t afford to work for free, and we believe workers should be paid for their labour.

We offer paid, full-time internships in person, in Wellington, New Zealand, as above, usually just for one student per year.

We also offer unpaid, part-time internships for students who are either paid through university internship programmes, or want work experience while they study.

Many people around the world also volunteer for HRMI doing all sorts of different things. Feel free to enquire if this sounds like a good option for you.

What else do you need to know?

HRMI is an independent, non-profit, global collaboration of academics and practitioners.

We have strong guiding values of collaborationusefulnessrigourtransparencyinnovation, and independence.

We work in a non-hierarchical way. Interns are welcome to speak up whenever they have thoughts to contribute.

New team members can be based anywhere in the world. HRMI is headquartered in Wellington, New Zealand, with another base of operations at the University of Georgia, in the United States. We work with people in many other countries, and are used to working across time zones.

We welcome new team members from any part of the world. We warmly welcome people from the Global South, and from under-represented groups to join us on the team.

The working language among the team is English. Knowledge of other languages is highly valued.

HRMI is doing exciting, cutting-edge work to improve people’s lives. We would love to have more people join us.
